Cell Phone Concern: On Jan. 7th I got a text message from "Gossip sms Alerts" saying I was going to be billed $9.99 monthly for their services, and to respond to the text with the word HELP if I wanted to cancel the service, or respond with another word if I wanted more info. Well, I did not want to respond at all, thinking if I responded that would somehow authorize their scam to get money from me, so I ignored it.Well, today their service appeared on my AT&T bill ! I have no clue how they did that, but I called AT&T and got it removed and a refund. I was told this can happen if you have used your cell phone number with some web sites or made purchases to places other than iTunes! Fortunately, AT&T has a FREE service called "purchase blocker" (a.k.a. parental controls). It blocks any purchases made from your phone to anyone other than iTunes. If you do want to charge something to another provider, a window pops up and you enter your PIN and you can then make the purchase! GREAT. So, beware. Watch your bills. This could happen to ANYONE with a cell phone! FIN` |
