Spectators decked themselves out in green at parades across the country today as cheering crowds of Americans - 32million of whom claim some Irish ancestry - celebrated St Patrick's Day.

Around two million spectators gathered beneath blue skies on one of the warmest days of the year so far as 200,000 bands, dancers and bagpipers marched along Fifth Avenue for New York's 250th St Patrick's Day Parade, America's biggest.

In Washington, the North Lawn fountain at the White House was dyed green for the third year in a row. President Barack Obama celebrated the day with Irish prime minister Enda Kenny, who he welcomed for a St Patrick's Day luncheon.

The president also announced he will be repaying the visit in May, as ancestry experts revealed his great-great-great-grandfather was Irish - and he still has 28 living Irish-American relatives today.
