HOWRAH BRIDGE:The HOWRAH BRIDGE is a bridge that spans the Hooghly Riverin West Bengal, India. It was originally named the NEW HOWRAHBRIDGE because it links the city of HOWRAH to its twin city,KOLKATA (CALCUTTA). On the 14th June 1965, it was renamedRabindra Setu, after Rabindranath Tagore, a great poet andthe first Indian Noble laureate. However, it is still popularly knownas the Howrah Bridge.The bridge is one of the four on the Hooghly River and is a famoussymbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. It successfully bears theweight of a daily traffic of approximately 80,000 vehicles andpossibly more than 1,000,000 pedestrians. It is the sixth largestbridge of its type in the world. It was constructed between1937 to 1943 and had a single 450 m span. It is 705 metres longand 30 metres wide.
